Beason and Woodland Heights Cemeteries
The land where Beason and Woodland Heights Cemeteries are located was donated by Grant Beason. He and his wife were buried there in 1838, but their graves have no markers. Beason Cemetery is located three miles northwest of Chattanooga. Take Highway 27 from Redbank to the Cherokee Motel, turn right, then turn again. Follow the signs to the Woodland Heights Baptist Church. The cemetery is behind the church parking lot.
As well as the Beason’s, the Stringer’s, whom Stringer’s Ridge was named, are also buried there. There are also many veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War II, Koren War, and Vietnam buried in Beason Cemetery.
A group formed to clean and preserve the cemetery. The group called “The Beason Cemetery Improvement League” consists of family and friends of those buried there. The last known tombstone listing was made in 1939 by the State of Tennessee. In the 1939 listing, there were only about one hundred forty names. In late 1991, early 1992 we updated the listing. There are over four hundred names in the new listing. There were hundreds of unmarked graves that had to be identified through Hamilton County death records and obitiurary listings. This list Includes the Woodland Heights Cemetery which is adjacant to Beason Cemetery.
This is the most accurate and up to date listing.
W. H. stands for the Woodland Heights part of the cemetery.
